After graduated from Grande Prairie Regional College, I enrolled at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta. I saw a dance audition notice on campus. Although I had never learnt to dance before, I was curious to learn a new medium. I'm thankful to my choreographer Betty Paulson who chose me. Betty created this inspirational dance piece, which incorporated stomp dance and Indonesian dance movements. It was such a valuable experience for me to participate and observe her incredible creation process. Like I explained in my previous post "5 DAYS ART CHALLENGE--DAY 1", I had previously acted in plays, which were written by playwrights--my role as an actor was to interpret the script and act genuinely. During this dance productions, I discovered that a dance creation process also involves many 'ah-ha!' moments. I witnessed that Betty was often jumping with joy whenever she received 'ah-ha!' intuitions.  Through this dance production, I met this incredible dancer, Meg O'Shea.  I really admired her attitude during our hard rehearsals--she was always positive, energetic, hardworking, and danced with a charming smile.

I was so lucky to have had another opportunity to learn dance by Betty Poulson.  If I were 1 year late to come to this school, Betty wouldn't be there any more. Betty discovered a way to utilise my unique double-jointed, super-flexible body into a dance piece. I had never thought such things would be useful for dancing!!   I'm very thankful to Betty because I later made more and more performing pieces, which I used my uniquely flexible body features. I wouldn't be creating such pieces if I didn't meet Betty at this point of my life, seriously.

This was my first performing art piece, which I created from the scratch.  As I had never created my own performance piece before, it was very scary for me to this. My drama/dance teacher Lisa Doolittle was so amazing, and I received many encouragements and inspirations. I experienced many magic 'ah-ha' intuitions during this creation process.  My juggler friend Niall Mckenna also gave me great insights for how to incorporate music with a performing piece.  Niall had been creating his own juggling performing pieces, and taught me to listen to the music carefully, and use the emotional tone/mood of the music to assist what I wanna express in my dance movement.

WORK 4--The Opposite Man (2001, Lethbridge, Canada)

Lethbridge wasn't a big city, but many artistic actives were happening. There was a collaborative art project called, 'Dada Cabaret' at the Trianon Gallery, and I performed an original solo performance art piece.  I used both Gil Shaham and Karen Finley music in my piece. I enter the stage in my beautiful yukata (summer kimono) with a big white laundry basket. On stage, I started to take off my yukata and put on a man's clothes instead--transforming from a Japanese woman to a Western man. On the 3rd photo, I may look like facing front and making a bow to the audience, but I was actually facing toward the window. I was using my super flexible double-jointed body to make an illusion, as if I was dancing toward audience. I saw many more intriguing Dada performance pieces on that cabaret night.
